This is Winter Hazard Awareness Week in Minnesota.
Today’s (Friday) topic is Winter Driving.
Winter weather can result in hazardous driving conditions, and it’s important to prepare ahead of time in order to stay safe on the highways this winter.
Safety officials recommend making sure your vehicle is ready for the season with any needed maintenance, and keep your gas tank at least half-full to avoid gas line freeze-up. It’s also a good idea to carry a winter storm survival kit. The National Weather Service has a list of items that are recommended to keep with you in your vehicle during winter driving.
Remember to leave plenty of distance between your vehicle and a snowplow.
If you do get trapped with your vehicle in a winter storm, be sure to stay in your vehicle. Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow, and run the engine a few minutes every hour as needed to stay warm. Call 911 if you have a cell phone, and advise the dispatcher of your location.
More information on winter road safety is available from the Minnesota Safety Council and MnDOT.
