Severe Weather Awareness Week (Part 5) Extreme Heat Waves

Throughout the week, KRWC Radio has been observing Minnesota’s Severe Weather Awareness Week.

Today we present our 5th and final part of our 5-part series, focusing on the dangers associated with heat waves.

When we discuss severe weather, most people immediately think of tornadoes, thunderstorms and all the weather threats that warm-weather storms can present.

But safety officials all agree that for some segments of the population, especially the very young and the elderly, extended heat waves can also be potentially deadly.

During extremely hot weather, we are encouraged to check in on loved ones, particularly the elderly to make sure everyone is safe. Staying hydrated is extremely important, especially for those who work outdoors.

Residents are also reminded that parked vehicles can get to extremely dangerous interior temperatures in a matter of minutes, so small children and pets should never be left unattended in a vehicle in hot weather.
