Buffalo Municipal Utilities worked to repair a sewer force main break late Monday afternoon and into the evening.
Officials said the break was detected along Highway 25 just south of the Buffalo Library’s main parking lot near Lift Station 2. According to the city’s Facebook page, the break occurred in an older section of infrastructure, connected just before the recently installed force main.
Information from the city indicated that the break was identified early, which allowed staff to quickly implement containment measures, keeping the release into Buffalo Lake at a minimum.
“No access” signage for swimming or fishing was reportedly posted around the public beach area at Sturgis Park, and along the shore up to the area of the library.
City officials said in an update around 10 PM Monday that repairs had been completed, and the system was functioning as normal. Samples will be taken over the next few days and tested by the MPCA, for results. Expectations are that the area will be re-opened to fishing and swimming once the results are received.
The city thanked the utility staff for their prompt action to contain and repair the break as quickly as possible.
