Four Individuals Remain Candidates for MN Senate District 29 Special Election

The filing window for candidates interested in running in the special election in November in Minnesota Senate District 29 has now closed.

The end of the business day on Wednesday of this week was the deadline for Affidavits of Candidacy either with Wright County Elections, or the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office.

Four candidates overall remain though some withdrew their names after their initial filing.

Three GOP candidates are proceeding with a run for the State Senate seat that became open when longtime State Senator Bruce Anderson of Buffalo passed away unexpectedly on July 21st. Michael Holmstrom, Jr. of Buffalo has the endorsement of the Wright County GOP after a caucus session this week. Holmstrom’s endorsement led to two original Republicans to withdraw. Wright County Commissioner Tina Diedrick, and Delano City Councilmember Jason Franzen withdrew their names before the Thursday deadline to do so. Their names will not appear on the primary election ballot on August 26th. Remaining as GOP candidates along with Holmstrom are Rachel Davis, and Bradley Kurtz, who was a late filer on Wednesday.

Louis McNutt was the lone DFL candidate to file, and thus, barring any surprise write-ins, he will advance without challenge from the primary.

The Senate District 29 Special Election has been set by the governor for November 4th.
