Memorial services will be held today (Monday) for a Monticello man who will be remembered for a life of deep commitment to his family and community. Kurt Hartner passed away July 4th at the age of 80 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Kurt had a lengthy career with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. His title at the time of his retirement was Relocation Manager and Property Management Supervisor.
He also served as the President of the Minnesota Bureau of Public Appraisers, and helped to establish the International Right of Way Association / MnDOT Conference.
Kurt was also a veteran of the U-S Army Reserve, serving as a trained medic from 1966 to ’72.
Among his civic contributions and volunteer services included volunteer youth probation officer. He was also a past Junior Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year. In the 1970s and 80s, Kurt served as a softball umpire and as the American Softball Association District 4 Commissioner.
He was a founding member and past president of the Hanover Athletic Association. He was also active with the Masons, the Shriners, the Lions, and the St. Michael Youth Hockey Board. Kurt also served 10 years on the St. Michael-Albertville School Board.
A Memorial Gathering for Kurt Hartner will be held today from 4 to 6 PM, with a Memorial Service at 5 PM at the Peterson Chapel in St. Michael. A reception will follow at the Monticello American Legion.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Hanover Athletic Association, and the Monticello American Legion Post 260.
