Minnesota’s turkey production industry is in favor of developing a vaccine strategy to battle highly pathogenic avian influenza.
Ashley Kohls is the Executive Director of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association, headquartered in Buffalo.
She says there are vaccines for HPAI, but none are authorized for use in U-S poultry…
“And because of the approach toward stamping out the disease, and the trade implications with that, is why we’re currently not able to use vaccines for high-path avian influenza. But it’s not because we’re also not talking about it.”
Countries including China, Mexico and France have used avian influenza vaccination programs in poultry, but the U-S could face export restrictions if HPAI vaccination is allowed.
