Officials in Monticello will continue discussions today (Wednesday) surrounding a proposed ordinance that could regulate the possible development of a large data center south of the city.
The Monticello City Council will hold a data center workshop today (Wednesday) beginning at 5 PM at the Monticello Community Center.
Officials are expected to review language and details of the ordinance drafted through the work of the city’s Planning Commission. The public is said to be welcome to attend and observe although no comment period from the public is expected since this is a workshop with no formal action expected to be taken.
The potential construction of a data center in Monticello has been a hotly contested topic for a number of months. Many opponents are concerned about the potential strain on the city’s infrastructure along with environmental concerns and feelings that such a facility would negatively affect the value of adjacent and nearby properties.
Several communities across the state are going through similar situations with proposals for huge data centers.
