Fall hydrant flushing continues in the City of Buffalo through mid-October.
Fire hydrant flushing is done in the spring and fall to ensure that the hydrants are in working order for fire protection, and to remove mineral deposits that may accumulate in the water distribution system.
Officials ask residents and visitors to use caution when approaching flushing operations. Residents are also advised to refrain from doing laundry between the hours of 5 AM to 7 PM, and to check your water color prior to doing laundry since discolored water may stain clothing.
To help minimize water discoloration, households are asked to limit water use, as well as outside watering when you see flushing operations in your neighborhood.
A progress map will be posted on the City of Buffalo website and updated daily to help monitor when hydrants in various neighborhoods have been flushed.
Hydrant flushing is expected to continue through Friday, October 16, 2026. Any questions may be directed to the City of Buffalo Water Department.
