Fisherman Dies When Boat Capsizes on Mississippi River Near Monticello

A man died Tuesday morning on the Mississippi River near Monticello when the boat that he and two other fisherman were aboard capsized near the Xcel Energy Power Plant.

The Wright County Sheriff’s Office says a 9-1-1 call came in around 10:30 AM alerting authorities to the capsized boat. Authorities say the three people aboard went into the water. Two made it safely to shore, while a third person was reportedly found by Xcel Energy employees and was brought to shore where first responders attempted lifesaving measures. Those efforts were unsuccessful and the man was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the deceased man, and the names of the other persons involved have not yet been released.

Wright County officials were assisted by Xcel Energy employees, the Monticello Fire Department, Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota DNR, the State Patrol, Allina Ambulance and LifeLink.

The incident remains under investigation.
