Saturday is the 2024 big game fishing opener in Minnesota.

This week, KRWC Radio News is presenting a 6-part series leading up to the opener, covering many aspects of one of the biggest outdoor activities in the state.

The annual fishing opener is steeped in tradition in Minnesota. Minnesota DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen says she’ll be on the water Saturday along with countless other Minnesotans on the opener…”I’m so excited, this is one of my favorite times of year. We’ve already got our boat out of storage and I’m ready to hit the open water. The cool thing is that knowing you’re one of more than a million Minnesotans who will be out fishing this summer season. I know I’ve already got my license, and I hope that other Minnesotans go out and get their license and enjoy this fishing opener.”

Southern Regional Fisheries Manager for the DNR, Jack Lauer, agrees that the annual fishing opener has deep traditions in our state…”You know the fishing opener is a traditional thing. We have families that they block out a week or a weekend in May and get together to head to the cabin, to a lakeshore, or just hang out with friends to fish. That’s recreation in Minnesota, you’re getting people outdoors to experience fishing, it’s just something we do, and it’s exciting. About 1 in 5 people in Minnesota fish, and that’s an important thing because it’s part of the fabric of what we do and how we recreate around our resources.”
