Thousands of Minnesotans are expected to hit the road over the Labor Day weekend, and drivers are seeing significantly higher fuel costs.
Triple A shows the current average price of a gallon of self-serve unleaded gasoline in Minnesota is $3.97 per gallon, down from a $4.05 per gallon average a week ago, but way up from the $3.11 per gallon average on Labor Day 2025.
The current average across the Twin Cities metro area is an even $4.00 per gallon, up about six cents per gallon from a month ago, but up more than 80 cents per gallon from the $3.19 average price a year ago.
Wright County’s average gas price is running around $3.96 per gallon this Labor Day.
While prices are down somewhat from a big temporary jump in mid-August, prices are still way above last year’s fuel costs at this time of year.
Triple A reports that the national average cost of diesel fuel recently hit $5.85 per gallon which is a new highest recorded average price.
Most experts say the higher price at the pump stems from the on-going was with Iran, and the instability at the Strait of Hormuz.
