“Earlier this summer, we did have detections of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza here in Minnesota. It’s a situation that we were well aware that could and likely would happen again. It’s always disappointing to get back into the fall migration period where we start to find cases again.”
Dr. Shauna Voss with the Minnesota Board of Animal Health says strict adherence to bio-security standards remains the best safeguard against HPAI…
“It’s still our number one tool that we have to try to keep that virus on the outside of things. It’s a tiny little virus that can always find ways to sneak in, but we are always reminding our growers to take note of those security measures, make sure their staff are trained, and there’s added expectations for our producers as well both from the state auditing that we do and also the federal auditing during High-Path outbreaks. So producers are aware of that, and are continuing to work toward improving their practices.”
Officials say they continue to believe that most cases of HPAI are related to infected migratory birds passing through during the annual fall migration season.
