MN School Nutrition Association Conference Underway in St. Cloud

Students and teachers aren’t the only ones getting ready for the new school year. The 69th annual Minnesota School Nutrition Association Conference is on this week at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud now through Wednesday.

Association President Glen Ritter, who is the food service director for the St. Michael-Albertville School District, says the event will feature one of the Midwest’s largest school nutrition trade shows, with more than 160 vendor booths. He says attendees will also hear from experts on farm-to-school programs, creative menu planning, and other innovative ways to improve school meals…

So we do have some great sessions that are presented by the Department of Agriculture, Minnesota here. And just to help give people some ideas on things that they can do and how some of the success stories that happen in other school districts.”

Ritter says there is currently a trend of more trained chefs bringing their culinary skills to school kitchens, helping to create fresher, more appealing meals for students…

I do know that there are a lot of people that have culinary degrees, have gone to school to be chefs that have transitioned into working in schools because they understand kind of the food science of how to cook.”

Officials say over 600 of Minnesota’s school nutritionists will attend the annual conference.
