A Wright County man who was arrested in what authorities described as a “critical incident” in the City of Montrose earlier this month faces 11 counts filed against him.

Wright County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to arrest 36-year-old Matthew Lyrek of Montrose on a number of outstanding warrants on April 15th as he approached his truck outside the Dollar General store on Highway 12 in Montrose.

You’ll remember that deputies attempted to take Lyrek into custody using “less than lethal means” that included Tasers and non-lethal bean bag rounds as well as “foam baton” bullets.

The BCA indicates that the actions from the deputies happened at the same time that Lyrek allegedly drew a pistol and reportedly pointed it in the direction of the deputies.

After several moments, deputies were able to take control of Lyrek and he was arrested. He was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis for treatment of gunshot wounds.

Documents filed this week indicated that Lyrek had another gun on his person, and during a search of his vehicle, deputies reportedly found two more guns. A search of the man’s home reportedly turned up more weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition. Because of an outstanding order for protection, Lyrek was not allowed to lawfully posses guns or ammunition.

The charges against Lyrek include four counts of first-degree assault on a peace officer, and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Other charges have to due with the possession of guns and ammunition while being the subject of a protection order, as well as carrying a handgun without a permit.

Lyrek’s bail was set at 5 million dollars without conditions, or 2 million dollars with conditions. He remains in custody at the Wright County Jail after being released from HCMC.

The BCA’s investigation is on-going.
