The Senate Agriculture Committee passed a new Farm Bill Wednesday, but Democrats say it will still face a tough test getting through the entire Senate.
Democrats say this bill does not address the need to restore cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, otherwise known as SNAP. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar says farmers need a good farm bill to pass…
“Headwinds of the tariffs. The headwinds of the closing of the Straits of Hormuz. The cost of fertilizer have all hit them very hard and that makes it even more imperative that we get this Farm Bill done.”
Klobuchar says the new version does not address the need to replace cuts to the SNAP program. She says while a new Farm Bill is critical for the nation’s farmers and ranchers, it’s also crucial for a significant segment of consumers…
“Who have been equally hit by these tariffs. The cost of $1800 last year. $2500 with the 50% tariffs to Canada and so what we will expect for this year and that’s why we think it is critical that we stand up for them too. “
Democrats are also pushing for is E-15 fuel sales year round which would benefit Minnesota corn growers.
Lawmakers say while the current Farm Bill expires in two weeks, there are some provisions that stay in place until the end of the year.
