Record Memorial Day Travel Expected Despite High Fuel Costs

Record travel is expected on this Memorial Day 2026, despite the fact that for motorists, it means a harder hit to our wallets.

AAA projects more than 45 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the Memorial Day holiday period that began May 23rd thru this Memorial Day, May 25th.

AAA projects 39.1 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, with another 3.6 million expected to fly to their destinations.

Due in large part to ongoing war in Iran, gas prices are much higher than last year. The Minnesota average of $4.30 per gallon is up $1.27 per gallon from last year at the same time. The Twin Cities and Wright County average price at the pump is $4.34 per gallon, up about a dollar and a quarter per gallon from $3.10 gas during the 2025 Memorial Day weekend.
