Because of the late occurrence of Labor Day this year, the start of the new school year has been somewhat staggered throughout the state. Today however, all schools will be back in session after the Labor Day holiday.
Mike Hanson with the Office of Traffic Safety is reminding drivers to be extremely cautious around school buses…
“We really need to be conscious of and aware of school buses; they’re going to be all over the place again, and drivers need to really pay attention to what they’re doing around those buses.”
He says thankfully, school bus-related fatalities are relatively rare…
“That’s a good thing, and we want to keep it that way, but even one of them is too many.”
Motorists are required to stop at least 20 feet from a school bus displaying red flashing lights or a stop arm. Those who attempt to pass a school bus could be found guilty of a gross misdemeanor and subjected to more serious penalties and fines.
