Wright County Clarifies Upcoming County Board Discussion on Data Center Zoning

Wright County’s Administration has issued a clarification about an upcoming public hearing at the May 19th meeting of the county board regarding a possible zoning ordinance addressing data centers.

Officials say there has been inaccurate information circulating on social media regarding that public hearing which will examine a matter brought forward by Wright County Planning & Zoning. The discussion will be about a potential interim zoning ordinance that could create an emergency moratorium of up to 12 months on the approval and construction of data centers in Wright County.

County administration emphasizes however, that while Wright County Planning & Zoning has authority over zoning in Wright County townships, it does not have authority in the individual cities. For that reason, any potential emergency moratorium language that would be considered by the county board would not overrule, or in any other way change the process for possible data center development in the City of Monticello.

Officials say while the county is interested from hearing from residents regarding the proposed county moratorium, they want to be clear that discussion will not involve or impact the process moving forward for any future proposals for a data center in Monticello.
