Wright County is joining the rest of the country today marking the January birthday of the most iconic individual from the U-S civil rights movement in the 1960s…
“…I have a dream…my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!”
A famous excerpt of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s August 28th, 1963 speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington.
The speech was instrumental in mobilizing supporters of de-segregation and in large part, prompted the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday established in 1986 to honor the January 15th birth date of the slain civil rights leader.

King was a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and was posthumously honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a Congressional Gold Medal.
In honor of the national holiday, federal, state, county and city governmental offices are closed today. Post offices are closed and there is no mail service. Most schools are closed, as are the majority of banks throughout the area.
Most retailers and other businesses however, are open normal hours today.
