Minnesota safety officials remind motorists that with school re-opening this week, school buses will be a common sight on the roads…

We really need to be conscious of and aware of school buses; they’re going to be all over the place again, and drivers need to really pay attention to what they’re doing around those buses.”

Mike Hanson with the Office of Traffic Safety says motorists are required to stop at least 20 feet from a school bus displaying red flashing lights.

He says thankfully, school bus accidents, or worse yet, fatalities, are relatively rare…

That’s a good thing, and we want to keep it that way, but even one of them is too many.”

He reminds drivers to think ahead, slow down in school zones, and stop when the school bus’s arms are extended. Hanson says stop-arm violations can result in up to a 500-dollar fine. Those who attempt to pass a school bus could be found guilty of a gross misdemeanor and subjected to more serious penalties.
