Members of a Minnesota Senate working group met for two days last week talking over gun violence prevention issues.
Following those meetings, the question becomes whether or not the GOP and DFL could come together and get anything passed in a special session.
When it comes to banning assault rifles, the feeling is that it’s doubtful the parties could work anything out. Wright County Senator Eric Lucero, Republican of St. Michael says a special session debate on that topic may even be a waste of time on a constitutional basis…
“We’re here to talk about solutions and what we can do. It’s very clear that has been enumerated many times before passing new gun laws will be tied up in courts and not have an impact and likely found unconstitutional.”
DFL Senator Ron Latz from St. Louis Park says this topic should not be a part of the partisan politics that frequently comes into play on other matters…
“It’s not just the Democrats job to pass an assault weapons ban. We will try. We will try but it should be and it is an obligation of every member of the legislature to take steps to go after the weapons, not just the people.”
The decision is now up to Governor Tim Walz on when, or if, to call a special session.
