National Fire Prevention Week 2025 Focuses on Minimizing Lithium-Ion Battery Risks

This is National Fire Prevention Week, and the 2025 theme centers around the risks of lithium-ion batteries, and how to minimize the fire risks associated with them.

Most of the electronics in our homes, from smartphones, laptops and tablets, to toys, and even power tools and outdoor power equipment are largely powered by various styles of lithium-ion batteries.

Officials with the National Fire Prevention Association, or NFPA, remind everyone that if not used correctly, or damaged, lithium-ion batteries can overheat, possibly starting a fire, or even exploding.

The NFPA reminds consumers to buy only safety tested products, charge devices safely paying close attention to the manufacturer’s instructions, and dispose of these batteries only at a safe battery recycling location.

Throughout the week, fire departments from around the area have been visiting schools reminding students about fire safety, with reminders to bring home to keep their families safe.
