The fall vaccine season looks noticeably different this year after the Centers for Disease Control has pulled its recommendation that the general public get a COVID-19 shot.
The University of Minnesota’s Infectious Disease Director, Dr. Michael Osterholm says the result is confusion regarding the COVID vaccine that can also spill over to other seasonal vaccinations…
“You know, this is not the recommendation that we would like to see in terms of encouraging people to get their COVID, flu, and R-S-V vaccines, okay all three of them. In the past the C-D-C would have had an active fall campaign reminding citizens of their need to get vaccination. So, now that doesn’t exist. So, anytime you put a barrier between you and the vaccine – in this case you can’t get it until a health care provider provides the information that you can – is a challenge.”
Osterholm says another confusing factor for the public is which health care providers can recommend the COVID shot.
The CDC has said it wants to leave the choice on vaccination up to patients.
