Cooking Safety Reminders for Thanksgiving

For many, Thanksgiving is the start of several weeks of specialty cooking in the kitchen for the holidays.

Minnesota State Fire Marshal Dan Krier says there are some special situations we should be cautious of during the busy holiday season…

Things like a crowded stove top, having flanked combustible items too close to that stove top during the holidays, kitchens get busier and distractions increase. So pay attention. Be in the kitchen and be present while cooking.”

Krier says if a fire does happen, there are precautions that can be taken ahead of time to hopefully minimize the damage and to avoid injuries…

If we can’t prevent the fire, we want you to be safe. And so that’s where having working smoke alarms really matters. So test your smoke alarms, make sure the batteries are fresh. They’ve been replaced in the past year and make sure that all of your detectors are less than 10 years old.”

Krier says a working fire extinguisher that you’re familiar with is also a great item to have in the kitchen during the holidays and throughout the year.
