High Input Costs Continue to Take a Toll on Farmers’ Bottom Line

Farm officials in Minnesota say there are no quick fixes for high ag input prices.

Waverly area farmer and Minnesota Farm Bureau President Dan Glessing says he’s hopeful steps taken by the USDA to address fertilizer markets will make a difference. The USDA is investing $500 million to expand domestic fertilizer production and boost competition, to strengthen supplies and bring greater price stability to farmers over time.

Glessing says while fertilizer is part of the problem, it’s far from the only expense putting pressure on producers…

You look at the insurance bill, the electric bill, all of those inputs. Especially on a dairy farm in the summertime when you’re running fans and sprinklers and everything else, that electric bill adds up too. But beyond that, it’s the parts (and) the whole system of what you’re putting in.”

Glessing says while commodity prices are coming up, the costs continue to limit profitability.
