Halloween can be an especially scary time for our pets.
Jackie McCullough with the Animal Humane Society says dogs and cats can get easily spooked when trick-or-treaters start showing up at your house…
“If your pet is at risk of running out that door or having a bad time overall with that commotion, I recommend finding a safe spot. It could be in another room, it could be in a bathroom, just make sure your pet is going to be somewhere where they’re going to stay safe and maybe put some music on. Something to distract them.”
McCullough says it’s also important to keep those treats away from dogs and cats, especially chocolates…
“I think one of the biggest ones to always watch out for is just to make sure that all of your Halloween treats are out of reach of your pets. So many of them can be really terrible for your pets. We mostly know chocolate being bad for dogs and cats.”
Veterinarians say candies with the sweetener Xylitol can be very toxic and sometimes fatal, especially for dogs.
