New Tariffs Not to Blame for Gas Price Increase in Minnesota

Most drivers in our area and throughout the state have noticed gas price increases in recent days.

While many people are quick to blame new tariffs for the jump at the gas pump, Brynna Knapp with Triple-A Minnesota says a wholesale price increase of around 30 cents a gallon in the Great Lakes Region resulted in about a 20 cent per gallon increase in Minnesota…

“So no tariffs on Canadian or Mexican petroleum and no tariffs on European gasoline cargoes that come into the U-S. But again it’s too early for us to comment on if they will impact gas prices directly.”

Knapp says another factor affecting gas prices is the seasonal transition of fuel blends…

“But this is again typically for the March- April time frame as demand for gas generally goes up in the spring and we switch into our summer blend from our winter blend of gas.”

Knapp says at least for now, the statewide average of $3.20 a gallon is actually about 10 cents less than the $3.33 were paying at this time last year.
