2026 KRWC Wright County Area High School Girls Basketball Awards

The Winter sports season is over, and here at KRWC we will once again name the best of the best from the Wright County Area in Winter sports. The focus today will be on Girls Basketball. Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches on a great winter sports season.

Player of the Year: Samantha Voll, Monticello. What a career for Voll! This season she became the all-time leading scorer in Monticello basketball history, male or female, avg. 27 ppg, with a career high 52 during the season and let Monticello back to the state tournament for the second straight season. Voll was at her best against the best. In marquee matchup with Tori Oerlein from Crosby Ironton, Voll hit the game winning layup at the buzzer. Against Maddyn Greenway and Providence, the Magic came up just short, but Voll scored 27 points and had 8 rebounds in the loss. In the section finals, Voll scored 38 as the Magic cruised past the Elks. At state Voll avg 29 pts, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists as the Magic took home the consolation championship. Voll will continue her basketball career at St. Thomas, starting next fall.

Coach of the Year: Craig Geyen, Monticello. Geyen has been with the Magic for almost twenty years and has guided the Magic to their best finishes in school history. In fact, Monticello has been to state six times, and every time it has been Geyen at the helm. This was also the second straight season Monticello made the state tournament after being ranked #1 in the state going into last year’s state tournament in Class AAA. This season the Magic moved up to AAAA, but still advanced to state and were on the edge of an upset over #2 Rochester Mayo, before the Spartans held on for the two-point win. The Magic then defeated Chanhassen and Blaine to finish with the consolation championship. Geyen, behind eight seniors, once again got the best out of his players and proved that the Magic can play with anyone in the state.

Teams of the Year: Monticello Magic. I know, couldn’t you pick another school besides Monticello for an award? Honestly, not this year! Monticello was clearly the best team in the Wright County area, and they have been for two years. In the last two seasons, Monticello has gone a combined 56-7, were ranked #1 in the state last season in Class AAA, and this season after an 0-2 start, the Magic went 27-3 the rest of the season, and advanced to thte state tournament once again, but this time at the AAAA level. The Magic were led by their eight seniors. Voll of course was the leader, but the Magic weren’t just a one-person team. Abby Ruda, avg. 13 ppg and went over 1,000 points for her career in February. Her sister, Addison, avg 9 ppg and Parker Haffeman did a little bit of everything for the Magic and avg. 8 ppg. Maddyln Barrow, the fifth starter for the Magic tied a Magic record for three pointers made in a game in the consolation championship game win over Blaine. Quite the legacy to leave behind for those seniors and deserving the Wright County Area team of not only this year, but the last two.
