A Buffalo native was honored in recent days with the Presidential Citizen’s Medal Award.

Diane Carlson Evans was honored not only for her service as a nurse during the Vietnam War, but also for being a champion of the service and sacrifices of women in uniform during that time.

Diane outlined her experiences both during and after returning home from the war in her book “Healing Wounds.” She also spearheaded the 10-year-long process of getting the Vietnam Women’s Memorial cleared for construction on the National Mall in Washington, D-C.

President Joe Biden spoke prior to bestowing the medals to the recipients…

…Our democracy begins and ends with the duties of citizenship. That’s our work for the ages, and that’s what all of you embody. It’s now my honor to award the Presidential Citizen’s Medal.”

Due to health concerns, Diane Carlson Evans, who now lives in Montana, unfortunately was unable to make the trip to the nation’s capitol. She asked Denise Rohan, Past National Commander of the American Legion to accept the honor for her.

The White House says the Presidential Citizen’s Medal is awarded to “…citizens of the United States of America who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.”

Diane Carlson Evans was among 20 recipients of the Presidential Citizen’s Medal.
