Despite some bitterly cold temperatures in recent days, another vehicle has broken through some apparently less than sturdy ice on Buffalo Lake.

A listener gave a tip to KRWC Radio News late Monday morning that a mini-van had gone through the ice on the north side of Buffalo Lake.

Later information from Buffalo Fire Chief John Harnois indicated that the vehicle, a 2007 Dodge Caravan broke through the ice shortly after 8 PM Sunday evening, and his department was notified at 8:17 PM.

Chief Harnois said six rescuers with ice suits and other special rescue gear helped two people to safety. Other than being extremely cold and wet, no other injuries to the occupants of the vehicle, or emergency personnel were reported.

As of early Monday afternoon, the van appeared to be significantly more submerged than the two pickups that broke through the ice in shallow water at the north access to Buffalo Lake late last month.

Minnesota DNR officials again remind everyone that there should be at least four inches of new, clear ice for walking on, at least five to seven inches of ice for an ATV or snowmobile and for vehicles, 12 inches or more.
