MN Traffic Safety Director Assesses Legalized Marijuana’s Effects on Impaired Driving

Nearly two months into recreational marijuana being legal in Minnesota, how has it impacted police D-W-I enforcement efforts?

Minnesota Traffic Safety Director Mike Hanson says state data shows drugged driving arrests increased 96% from 2018 to 2022, due in large part to increased detection efforts. “The simple answer is: it hasn’t really changed anything, because quite honestly we’ve been arresting and dealing with cannabis-impaired drivers for decades in Minnesota.”

Some of those tools include Drug Recognition Evaluators, which can be called to a traffic stop to help officers determine if a driver is high. The state also launched a new saliva test program earlier this year.
