As of late October, Minnesota has reported a surge in Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreaks, with at least 19 confirmed cases in commercial poultry flocks since the start of the fall migration season in mid-September.
Ashley Kohls is the Executive Director of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association, headquartered in Buffalo…
“But unfortunately also that’s a pretty high percentage of nationwide cases, with Minnesota being number one in turkey and having the most turkey farms and flocks currently being grown. We are going to see a disproportionately high percentage of the national caseload here in this state.”
Kohls says the outbreaks have impacted some 600,000 birds across the state. She says, fortunately, Minnesota is well-versed on how to handle HPAI outbreaks.
