Big Lake Man Injured in Three-Vehicle Crash in Kanabec County Resulting in One Fatality

A local man was injured Wednesday morning in a traffic crash in Kanabec County that claimed the life of another driver.

The State Patrol describes the incident as a three-vehicle crash that happened on Highway 65 and Mahogany Street in Brunswick Township shortly after 6 AM Wednesday.

Authorities say a Chevy Avalanche pickup was southbound on Highway 65, while a Chevy Impala passenger car was northbound in the right lane. A Ford Econoline van was also northbound behind the Impala.

Officials say the pickup crossed the center line into the northbound lane and crashed into the Impala. The truck then continued southbound in the northbound lane and crashed head-on with the Ford van.

The driver of the Chevy pickup, 55-year-old Richard Kron of Grasston, Minnesota, died in the crash. Authorities noted that he was not using a seat belt.

The driver of the Ford van, 29-year-old Lucas Meyer of Big Lake, sustained non-life threatening injuries, and was transported to the Mora Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Chevy Impala involved in the crash, 61-year-old John Carlson of Isanti, was not injured.

Roads were snow and ice covered at the time of the crash.

The Kanabec County Sheriff’s Office, Welia Ambulance and the Mora Fire Department also responded to the crash scene for assistance.
