The name of a Wright County man has emerged as being the person who was shot by a Wright County deputy during a struggle outside a Montrose retail store earlier this week.

Multiple news sources have identified the man as 36-year-old Matthew Lyrek of Montrose, who is still hospitalized after what the Sheriff’s Department called a “critical incident” early Monday afternoon.

You’ll remember that around 1 PM, deputies attempted to arrest Lyrek on outstanding warrants outside the Dollar General store on Highway 12 in Montrose. Authorities say he resisted, and brandished a gun. Deputies continued with “less than lethal” measures, but when those measures failed, a deputy fired his weapon, hitting Lyrek.

The Sheriff’s Department reported that deputies administered first aid until an ambulance team arrived. Lyrek was then transported to a hospital. Details on his condition have not been released.

Meanwhile, the Minnesota BCA is continuing its investigation.
