Suspect in Custody After “Critical Incident” Involving Police Gunfire Outside Montrose Business

One person is in custody after what the Wright County Sheriff’s Office is calling a “critical incident” early this afternoon (Monday) in the City of Montrose.

Officials say around 1 PM, deputies from the Wright County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Dollar General store at 631 Nelson Boulevard, and U-S Highway 12 in Montrose. The Sheriff’s Office has reported that deputies were called to attempt the apprehension of an adult male on outstanding warrants.

In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office said deputies attempted to take the man into custody using “less than lethal measures” after he exited the store. Authorities say the man refused to comply with commands and brandished a firearm. The news release indicates that the man continued to resist arrest, and a Wright County Deputy discharged their firearm, striking the suspect. The man was taken into custody, and emergency aid was rendered by deputies. The man was then transported by ambulance from the scene.

There was no indication in the Sheriff’s Department report regarding the duration of the incident, nor is it currently known if more than one shot was fired by the deputy. There was no report of any shots being fired by the suspect. No information has been released about the identity of the adult male in custody, and his medical condition has not been released.

The Sheriff’s Department says the incident is contained and there is no danger to the public, though police presence could be seen at and around the Dollar General location for an undetermined amount of time.

The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
